The Forthcoming Project Rene in The Sims Series to Adopt Free-to-Play Model
The upcoming installment of The Sims, currently known as Project Rene, is set to be accessible without any upfront purchase or subscription costs upon its release. In a recent community update, Lyndsay Pearson, VP of Franchise Creative, revealed that the game will introduce fresh experiences and content over time, leveraging a business model distinct from the existing DLC structure in The Sims 4. For instance, if the base game includes weather, players can opt to buy additional content related to seasonal activities, allowing for flexibility in future pack themes. Pearson emphasized the goal of reducing barriers to entry and establishing a shared foundation that can be built upon. The Sims 4, meanwhile, will continue to receive new content, with Project Rene and The Sims 4 coexisting. Project Rene's development will involve multiple phases, including closed beta tests, public trials, and extensive early access periods. This announcement follows The Sims 4's transition to a free-to-play model last October, eight years after its initial launch, with the base game now free but the full DLC suite exceeding $1000.
