Unity Addresses Developer Concerns Over New Fee Structure

Unity has provided further details on its revised fee plan, which will come into effect on January 1, 2024. The company will charge developers a fee of up to $0.20 per install, but only after their game has generated $200,000 in revenue and 200,000 installs. However, Unity Pro and Enterprise accounts will be charged a lower fee of $0.01 per install, but only after they have exceeded $1 million in revenue and one million installs. The initial installation will be the only one to incur a fee, unless the game is installed on multiple devices. Demos and charity bundles will be exempt from the fee, and developers can inform Unity if their game is part of a charity bundle. The fee will be charged to the distributor for games on subscription services. Unity estimates that only 10% of developers will be affected by the fee due to the revenue and install thresholds. The announcement has sparked outrage among developers, with many expressing concerns about the impact on their businesses and the potential for 'install-bombing' by angry players. Unity's senior vice president, Marc Whitten, has assured that the company is listening to feedback and will continue to invest in its tools to support developers.
