Decade-Long Revenue of Mobile Puzzle Games Reaches $42 Billion

According to a recent report from Sensor Tower, the mobile puzzle game genre has accumulated a staggering $42 billion in revenue since 2013, accompanied by 50 billion downloads. Notably, real-time puzzle games such as Tetris and Traffic Jam Fever experienced significant expansion between January 2022 and March 2023, marked by a 103% surge in downloads and a 64% increase in revenue. The swap puzzle subgenre, which includes popular titles like Candy Crush and Royal Match, proved to be the most lucrative, accounting for 16% of total downloads and a substantial 59% of total revenue, equivalent to $25 billion. Candy Crush emerged as the top-grossing puzzle game, followed closely by Gardenscapes and Homescapes. During the period from January 2022 to March 2023, the swap puzzle subgenre witnessed an 8% rise in downloads and a 6% increase in revenue. Sensor Tower's analysis across four regions revealed that the swap genre consistently ranked as the highest-earning subcategory. In terms of regional revenue, China led the pack in 2022, accounting for 83% of puzzle game revenue, while Europe, Japan, and the USA also made significant contributions, with 71%, 53%, and 58% respectively. Pair games also demonstrated substantial growth, with revenue increasing by 47% and downloads rising by 14%. Conversely, Merge games saw a 28% increase in revenue but suffered a 28% decline in downloads.
