The acquisition ensures the site's continued operation under the guidance of its founder, Albert Yarusso, who will also assume the role of internal historian for Atari. Founded in 1998 as Atari 2600 Nexus and rebranded as AtariAge in 2001, the site boasts an extensive archive of Atari-related information, including hardware and software details, magazine and catalog scans, and a unique collection of modified ROMs and PAL-NTSC conversions for the Atari 2600. According to Atari CEO Wade Rosen, the acquisition is a nod to the significant role AtariAge has played in documenting Atari's gaming legacy and providing a platform for enthusiasts, collectors, and homebrew developers. By integrating AtariAge into its fold, Atari aims to provide the necessary support for this vital resource to thrive in the years to come. This move is part of Atari's broader strategy under Rosen's leadership, which has seen investments in retro-focused entities such as Antstream and Playmaji, the acquisition of MobyGames, and most recently, the purchase of Nightdive Studios for $10 million.
