Xbox's Future Success Hinges on Mobile Expansion, Including Streaming AAA Titles

According to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, the key to growing Microsoft's gaming business and the industry as a whole lies in mobile. The proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is expected to play a crucial role in establishing Xbox's presence in the mobile market, thanks to Activision's ownership of King, the developer behind Candy Crush. Spencer emphasized that the goal is not just to enter the free-to-play space, but to bring console-like experiences to mobile devices, which he believes is currently lacking. He cited the importance of making high-quality, story-driven games like Starfield, God of War, and Spider-Man available on mobile platforms, and noted that streaming technology, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, is a viable solution. Spencer also highlighted the partnerships Xbox has formed with other cloud gaming services, including GeForce Now, Boosteroid, and Ubitus, and stressed the need to 'decouple where the game runs from where it's played.' While dedicated gaming hardware will remain important, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft will continue to invest in its own devices and support other platforms, such as portable PCs like Steam Deck and ROG Ally. The ultimate goal, according to Spencer, is to grow the gaming industry as a whole, rather than simply expanding Xbox's market share at the expense of competitors like Sony and Nintendo.
