Microsoft Ceases Production of Azure Kinect

Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of the Azure Kinect, the successor to the Kinect Xbox accessory, marking the end of the motion-sensing camera's production lifecycle. According to a recent blog post, the company will discontinue sales of the latest hardware version by October or once existing stocks are depleted. Initially introduced in 2019, the Azure Kinect Developer Kit was designed for industries such as manufacturing, retail, and healthcare, rather than gaming. Microsoft stated, "We have decided to end production of the Azure Kinect Development Kit, but this technology will continue to be accessible through our partner network." This decision enables Microsoft to provide the technology to third-party partners, allowing them to develop and sell their own alternatives, as reported by VGC. Microsoft assured companies currently using Azure Kinect that they can continue to do so without interruption, and the software development kit will remain available for download. Additionally, devices sold will still be covered by the standard limited hardware warranty. For companies seeking a long-term solution or requiring customized hardware, Microsoft recommends exploring the offerings of its partners, including semiconductor company Analog Devices and 3D camera manufacturer Orbbec. This move follows Microsoft's previous decisions to discontinue the Kinect for Windows in 2015 and the Kinect for Xbox One in 2017, which was initially included with the console as a core interface component.
