Breaking Down Barriers: The African Games Market Demands Recognition

A recent Devcom panel discussion brought together influential figures from the African gaming industry, who passionately advocated for increased awareness and understanding of the continent's thriving games markets. Moderated by Vic Bassey, co-founder of Games Industry Africa and VP of business development at Starbreeze, the panel included Nick Hall, co-founder of Africa Games Week and CEO of RenderHeads, Limpho Moeti, business development manager at RocketRide and IGDA board member, and Hugo Obi, founder of Maliyo Games. In response to an audience question, the panel emphasized the need for the global gaming industry to educate itself about Africa's unique markets and challenges. The conversation highlighted the persistence of biases and misconceptions about the continent, which is home to over a third of the world's population. Hall stressed the importance of acknowledging and overcoming these biases, pointing out that Africa is often absent from global gaming maps and is frequently stereotyped. He argued that even basic research would reveal the diversity and complexity of the continent, and encouraged developers to support and promote African games. Moeti agreed, emphasizing the value of conscious efforts to seek out African developers and include them in industry events. Obi shared his own experiences, noting that attending events like the BIG indie games festival had helped him learn about the Brazilian gaming industry, and that similar events in Africa could help raise awareness and build connections. The panelists all agreed on the need for ongoing momentum and follow-up actions to build on the progress made so far, and to celebrate the successes of African game developers. By breaking down biases and preconceptions, the industry can work towards a more inclusive and equitable future, where African developers are recognized as peers and collaborators.
