Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Completes the Year-End Release Lineup

The recent announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has finalized the crucial Q4 lineup, which is expected to play a significant role in boosting console sales during the holiday season. Xbox sales have been sluggish this year, with a 13% decline in the most recent quarter, while PlayStation sales have been decent but below Sony's expectations. However, Sony COO Hiroki Totoki expressed confidence that the Q4 lineup, including exclusive titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and major third-party games, would energize the market. The Q4 lineup also features annual best-sellers FIFA and Call of Duty, with the latter being a significant contributor to the gaming industry's revenue. After initial uncertainty surrounding the release of a new Call of Duty game in 2023, Activision Blizzard confirmed the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which is set to release on November 10. The game's developer, Sledgehammer Games, in collaboration with Infinity Ward, has been working on the title for years, aiming to create a blockbuster sequel with a brand-new campaign, an extensive Zombies mode, and post-launch live seasons. The confirmation of a full-price Call of Duty game in November is expected to bring relief to retailers and the industry, particularly after Modern Warfare 2 broke revenue records last year. Other notable releases expected to drive the market include Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Assassin's Creed, and Super Mario Bros Wonder, as well as new entries in popular series like Mortal Kombat, Sonic, and Forza. The gaming industry has experienced a mixed year, with record-breaking launches of games like Hogwarts Legacy and Zelda, but also facing challenges like high inflation and global economic uncertainty. According to Newzoo, the market is expected to return to growth this year, with global games revenues predicted to grow 2.6% to $187.7 billion, driven in part by console sales.
