ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been synonymous with celebrating gaming culture across a variety of formats, from digital to tabletop. While the original PAX Unplugged concept debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017 as a celebration of board games, card games, and other analog experiences, the decision to expand the model to Houston reflects both the growing popularity of tabletop gaming and the strategic desire to reconnect with fans in the southern United States.

The inaugural Unplugged event in Pennsylvania proved that there is a robust appetite for non‑digital gaming experiences. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

Gonzalez notes that the success of the original Unplugged helped shape the vision for future editions, emphasizing that the community’s enthusiasm for dice‑rolling, card‑drawing, and strategic board play remains strong. When the team began evaluating the feasibility of a second Unplugged gathering, they examined a range of major metropolitan areas.

Their analysis weighed factors such as exhibitor demand, regional player density, and the availability of suitable venues. "We were always partial to returning to the South, and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us," Gonzalez says. This sentiment is especially poignant given the abrupt cancellation of PAX South in 2021, a decision that left many southern fans without a regional PAX experience.

The last PAX South event had taken place in San Antonio in January 2020, and its indefinite suspension left a noticeable gap in the PAX calendar. The chosen venue for the Houston edition is the George R.

Brown Convention Center, a facility well‑equipped to handle large‑scale conventions. The event will run from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, providing three full days of programming. Attendees can expect a bustling expo floor dedicated to analog gaming exhibitors, ranging from indie board game designers to established publishers showcasing their latest releases. In addition to the exhibition space, the schedule will feature a robust lineup of panels where designers, artists, and industry veterans discuss topics such as game mechanics, narrative design, and the future of tabletop publishing.

Competitive play will also be a cornerstone of the convention. Organized tournaments for popular titles—think classics like "Settlers of Catan" and newer hits such as "Gloomhaven"—will give participants a chance to test their skills against fellow enthusiasts. Community meet‑ups, hobbyist workshops, and demo sessions will further enrich the experience, allowing newcomers to learn the ropes and seasoned players to deepen their knowledge.

Gonzalez emphasizes that the primary focus for the organization right now is to ensure that existing events deliver the highest possible quality. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he states. This measured approach reflects a commitment to maintaining the standards that have made PAX a trusted name among gamers.

While the team is eager to grow the brand, they recognize that rapid expansion without adequate support could dilute the experience for both exhibitors and attendees. Nevertheless, the PAX brand is not standing still.

Gonzalez notes ongoing efforts to enhance the overall convention ecosystem across all locations, including the introduction of new feature areas, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks at both the East and West coast events. "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," he adds, underscoring the resilience of the fan base.

In practical terms, tickets for PAX Unplugged Houston will go on sale later this year, with tiered pricing to accommodate early‑bird buyers, students, and groups. Alongside ticket sales, the organizers will open applications for media representatives and content creators who wish to cover the event, ensuring broad coverage across streaming platforms, podcasts, and gaming news outlets.

The announcement of PAX Unplugged Houston signals a hopeful revival for southern gamers who have been waiting for a dedicated PAX experience since the cancellation of PAX South. By situating the event in a city with a vibrant cultural scene and a growing tabletop community, ReedPop and Penny Arcade aim to create a memorable gathering that honors the spirit of analog gaming while setting the stage for future expansions.

As the date approaches, fans can look forward to more detailed programming announcements, exhibitor reveals, and perhaps surprise collaborations that will make the 2027 edition a landmark moment in the evolution of PAX.
