UK PS5 Sales Experience Significant Uptick, Despite Initial Underperformance

The UK has witnessed a considerable acceleration in PlayStation 5 sales, driven by the console's new price point of £399, which was introduced two weeks ago. This price adjustment had an immediate impact, with sales increasing by 75% in the first week and continuing to rise by 59% in the second week, with a 51% increase in revenue. According to data from GfK, last week was the biggest week for PS5 sales in the UK so far this year. The Standard PS5 SKU has seen a significant 511% increase compared to the week before the promotions started, accounting for 92% of all PS5 consoles sold last week. Year-to-date, PS5 unit sales are up 73%, representing 47% of all home console sales this year, a notable increase from the 31% market share last year. Despite this growth, Sony has acknowledged that the UK performance was weaker than expected. During a financial call, Sony COO Hiroki Totoki stated that the latest promotional activities are showing promise, with PS5 hardware sales reaching 3.3 million units in the first quarter, a 38% year-on-year increase. However, this is somewhat lower than expected, prompting Sony to implement measures to achieve its fiscal year sales target of 25 million units. The upcoming release of Marvel Spider-Man 2 and other major titles is expected to energize the gaming industry and the PS platform. Regionally, Japan and Asia have seen strong sales, while North America has responded favorably to promotions. In the UK, sales have been weaker, but Europe as a whole has performed well. Retailers have been offering bundles with software, including Saints Row, Forspoken, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which topped the UK physical chart last week. The average selling price of PS5 hardware has dropped 11% since the promotions began, with the average price of the most popular PS5 bundle being £401, £84 cheaper than the most popular Xbox console bundle.
