Feminist Frequency to Cease Operations After 15 Years Under Anita Sarkeesian's Leadership

After 15 years, Anita Sarkeesian has announced the impending closure of Feminist Frequency. Citing personal exhaustion and the importance of maintaining her well-being, the executive director has decided to shut down all operations by 2024. Feminist Frequency initially gained recognition for its YouTube series that critiqued the portrayal of women in video games and media. The organization expanded its scope in 2020 with the launch of the Games and Online Harassment Hotline, which provided vital support to game developers. According to Sarkeesian, the organization's efforts have led to significant changes within the industry. "Our work challenged the status quo and paved the way for new content distribution methods in the early days of online video commentary," she stated. Although not the first to initiate conversations about inclusivity in gaming, Feminist Frequency played a crucial role in building a community that has become deeply meaningful to its members. Sarkeesian reflected on the personal costs of her work, including the constant online harassment she faced due to the organization's critiques of the games industry's treatment of women. "While I've previously spoken about the harassment myself and others have endured, I'm proud that discussions about online abuse have become more mainstream. However, this progress has come at a cost to my health and well-being," she added. Feminist Frequency's contributions have been recognized with a Peabody Award for its efforts in combating harassment within the gaming industry.
