ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been synonymous with large‑scale gaming conventions that celebrate both digital and analog experiences. While PAX has traditionally been known for its massive video‑game showcases, the Unplugged series focuses exclusively on tabletop, board, card, and role‑playing games, offering a space where fans of analog gaming can gather, play, and discover new titles.

The Unplugged concept first materialized in Pennsylvania back in 2017, where the inaugural event demonstrated the strong demand for a PAX‑style gathering dedicated solely to tabletop experiences. Since then, the tabletop sector has continued its upward trajectory, with a growing number of designers, publishers, and hobbyists entering the market.

"The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, PAX event manager, in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. He notes that the enthusiastic response from both exhibitors and attendees at previous Unplugged events convinced the organizers that expanding the model to new regions was a logical next step. When the team began evaluating potential locations for a second Unplugged, they considered a range of major U.S. cities, weighing factors such as exhibitor interest, local tabletop communities, and the logistical capabilities of each venue.

"We looked at demand from our exhibitor partners, the infrastructure of the city, and the overall enthusiasm of the regional gaming scene," Gonzalez said. "We were always partial to returning to the South, and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us." The decision to return to the Southern United States carries additional emotional weight. PAX South, which was held annually in Austin, Texas, was abruptly cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021, after its final edition took place in San Antonio in January 2020.

The cancellation left a noticeable void for fans in the region who had come to rely on the event as a yearly gathering point for gaming culture. By situating PAX Unplugged Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center—a state‑of‑the‑art facility known for hosting large conventions—the organizers aim to rekindle that sense of community and provide a fresh, dedicated space for analog gamers.

The three‑day schedule, running from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, promises a packed agenda. Attendees can expect a sprawling expo floor where tabletop publishers, indie creators, and hobby shops will showcase their latest releases, prototypes, and classic titles. In addition to the exhibition space, the program will feature a robust lineup of panels covering topics such as game design theory, the business of tabletop publishing, diversity and inclusion in board gaming, and the evolution of role‑playing narratives. Competitive tournaments will span a variety of formats—from Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon TCG to legacy board games and narrative-driven RPG campaigns—catering to both casual participants and seasoned veterans.

Community meetups will also play a central role, offering organized spaces for local gaming clubs, university groups, and fan societies to gather, host workshops, or simply enjoy a shared hobby. These gatherings aim to foster connections that extend beyond the convention walls, strengthening the regional tabletop ecosystem. Additional attractions may include live demonstrations, designer Q&A sessions, and a curated marketplace for rare and out‑of‑print games. Looking ahead, Gonzalez emphasizes that the primary focus remains on delivering an exceptional experience for current exhibitors and attendees before contemplating further expansion.

"We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he asserts. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each event maintains the high standards that PAX fans have come to expect. Nevertheless, the team is not standing still.

Gonzalez reveals that both the East and West coast PAX events are undergoing continual enhancements, with new feature areas, additional stages, and expanded programming tracks being introduced. "We're actively expanding the shows, introducing new feature areas, stages, and programming tracks at East and West, while constantly delivering a great expo hall with new games for fans to discover," he notes. This ongoing innovation signals that while PAX Unplugged Houston is a fresh addition, it will benefit from the lessons learned and the resources invested in the broader PAX family. The organizers also take a moment to acknowledge the resilience of the gaming community.

"We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," Gonzalez says. This sentiment underscores the symbiotic relationship between the convention and its audience—a relationship that has endured through economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, and even a global pandemic. Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston, along with media and content creator applications, are slated to open later this year.

Prospective attendees are encouraged to keep an eye on the official PAX website and social media channels for announcements regarding pricing tiers, early‑bird specials, and bundle packages that may include access to exclusive panels or limited‑edition merchandise. As the date approaches, the organizers promise to release a detailed schedule, a full exhibitor list, and additional information about travel and accommodation options in Houston. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston represents a strategic and heartfelt return to the Southern gaming market, offering a dedicated platform for tabletop enthusiasts to converge, compete, and celebrate their shared passion.

With a thoughtfully curated program, a premier venue, and a clear commitment to quality, the event is poised to become a cornerstone of the analog gaming calendar for years to come.
