EA Redefines Studio Leadership Following Samantha Ryan's Departure
Samantha Ryan, the General Manager of EA's group, has parted ways with the company. Ryan was responsible for overseeing EA studios that focused on genres outside of sports, racing, and shooting games. These studios included notable entities such as BioWare, known for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, Maxis, the force behind The Sims, Full Circle, which is working on Skate, Cliffhanger Games, involved with Black Panther, and Motive, known for Dead Space and Iron Man. According to EA, Ryan's decision to leave was driven by a desire for change. Following Ryan's departure, her responsibilities have been divided between two key individuals. The studios under Motive, Cliffhanger, and BioWare will now report directly to Laura Miele, the President of EA Entertainment. This realignment means that Patrick Klaus, the General Manager of Motive, Kevin Stephens of Cliffhanger, and BioWare's Gary McKay will all be under Miele's leadership. Additionally, Vince Zampella, who oversees significant franchises like Battlefield, Apex Legends, and Star Wars, will also be part of Miele's EA Entertainment group. In a separate move, Maxis and Full Circle will now be under the guidance of Rachel Franklin, who has been promoted to Senior Vice President and Group General Manager of Lifestyle Entertainment. This decision is based on the similar community expectations of the games developed by these studios. As a result, Catharina Mallet, the General Manager of Maxis, and Dan McCulloch, the head of Full Circle, will report to Franklin. Franklin previously led EA's Positive Play Group, an initiative aimed at making gaming communities safer and more inclusive. Established in 2020, this group included a charter and a strong stance against toxic behavior, including hate speech and abuse. Although the 20 members of this group have been reassigned to different studios, EA emphasizes that positive play remains a core priority. These changes are part of a broader restructuring effort at EA, which includes the introduction of a new management structure and the formation of two main organizations: EA Sports and EA Entertainment. Other key changes include the appointment of Stuart Canfield as CFO, following the departure of Chris Suh, and the promotion of David Tinson to Chief Experience Officer, replacing Chris Bruzzo. Cam Weber has been named the president of the EA Sports division.
