Roblox Workers Speak Out Against Lack of Workforce Diversity
A recent report has shed light on allegations of a discriminatory work environment at Roblox, where employees claim to have experienced marginalization and a lack of diversity initiatives. Current and former staff members shared their stories with Bloomberg, recounting instances of racist language and a lack of representation within the company, leading some to seek alternative employment opportunities. In one notable incident from 2021, a vice president was disciplined and apologized for using discriminatory language when discussing the hiring of female managers. Despite this, the company's co-founder and CEO, David Baszucki, allegedly made a comment during a Zoom meeting that was perceived as dismissive when questioned about the scarcity of female executives, stating that Roblox has 'a very high bar in hiring.' Furthermore, internal metrics obtained by Bloomberg reveal that high-ranking positions are predominantly held by men, although the company claims to have no specific targets for hiring or promoting diverse employees. However, the data does show a slight increase in female representation, from 24% in 2020 to 27% in May 2023, as well as a decrease in the percentage of white employees from 43% to 36%. Several employees also reported receiving 'racially-charged' feedback, with terms such as 'confrontational,' 'feisty,' 'combative,' and 'aggressive' being commonly used to describe their behavior. In response to the report, Roblox reiterated its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment, emphasizing that it expects all employees to treat each other with respect and civility, and reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment of any kind.
