UKIE Introduces New Guidelines for Paid Loot Boxes
The UK games industry, through UKIE, has unveiled a set of 11 guiding principles for paid loot boxes, developed in collaboration with industry stakeholders. The primary goals of these principles, available in full on the UKIE website, include limiting under-18s' access to loot boxes without parental consent and promoting transparency through targeted public awareness campaigns. The guidelines also recommend that paid loot boxes be clearly disclosed prior to purchase and download, and that they adhere to age rating systems such as PEGI. These principles were crafted by a cross-industry working group, comprising developers, platforms, trade bodies, and input from the DCMS, academics, and consumer advocacy groups. This Technical Working Group will continue to work closely with the UK Government to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures and commit to periodic reviews following a one-year implementation period. According to Daniel Wood, Ukie co-CEO, "These principles will enhance protections for all players, underscoring the industry's dedication to safe and responsible gaming." Minister for the Creative Industries, John Whittingdale, added: "The video games industry must do more to protect individuals from the potential harms of loot boxes. These new principles mark significant progress in ensuring that players can enjoy video games in a responsible and safe manner." This development follows the UK Government's call for the games industry to self-regulate, leading to the creation of these guiding principles.
