Tesco Ends Physical Game Sales in UK Stores as Gaming Shifts to Digital

Tesco, a major UK supermarket chain, has decided to discontinue the sale of physical video games in its 2,800 stores. This decision comes as the gaming industry increasingly moves towards digital entertainment. Once the existing stock of games is sold out, Tesco will allocate the shelf space to other products, with the exception of digital points cards, which will still be available for purchase. The supermarket chain attributes this change to the growing preference of its customers for digital entertainment. This move follows the closure of all 35 GameStop stores in Ireland, marking a significant shift in the gaming retail landscape. The UK gaming market has seen a rapid transition to digital, with less than 18% of the top games in June being sold through physical stores. This trend is further emphasized by the decline of physical game sales, prompting retailers like GAME to explore alternative product lines, such as toys and board games, in response to the changing market dynamics.
