Destiny 2 Player Ordered to Pay Nearly Half a Million Dollars for Racial Harassment

A player of Destiny 2 has been instructed by the court to pay Bungie approximately $490,000 in damages for subjecting a community manager to racial harassment. The issue began when the community manager showcased artwork created by Detrick 'Uhmaayyze' Houchens, a Black artist, in a community spotlight. In response, the player initiated a campaign of racism and terrorism against the manager and their family, according to court findings. The player's actions included leaving multiple offensive voicemails, requesting the creation of in-game options that would harm people of color, and ordering a pizza to the manager's home with the intent of sparking conflict. Following the incident, Bungie provided the employee with legal support, ensured their protection, and involved law enforcement. As a result, the player must pay $380,000 in damages, $25,000 in statutory damages, $84,000 for attorneys' fees, and $200 in attorneys' fees, totaling $489,200. This incident is not isolated, as Bungie previously filed a lawsuit against another Destiny 2 player in July 2022 for cheating and threatening employees on social media.
