UK Regulator Delays Final Ruling on Microsoft's Acquisition of Activision Blizzard

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has postponed its final decision on the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, citing the need for more time to review a new proposal submitted by the tech giant. Initially, the CMA was set to deliver its verdict on July 18, but Microsoft's recent submission has introduced new factors that require careful consideration. The CMA has decided to extend its review period by six weeks, with a new deadline of August 29, although it aims to reach a conclusion sooner. Microsoft faces a self-imposed deadline of July 18 to complete the deal, beyond which it may be liable to pay Activision Blizzard $3 billion. However, the companies can negotiate an extension, and Microsoft may still proceed with the deal in anticipation of eventual approval. Meanwhile, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also seeking to block the acquisition, having appealed a US court's decision to deny a preliminary injunction against the deal.
