Australia Introduces New Guidelines to Tackle Online Gambling

The Australian Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs has put forth 31 proposals aimed at curbing online gambling, with a particular focus on loot boxes. The report highlights the potential dangers of online gambling for both adults and minors, while also discussing support services. Regarding loot boxes, the committee notes that although the evidence is still emerging, there is a concern that young people who play games with these features may be more likely to engage in real-money gambling as adults, and that players can be coerced into spending more than they can afford. The committee views this as a pressing issue, stating that action cannot be delayed. Key recommendations for loot boxes include: - Default spending controls - Clear odds and drop rates for items - Algorithmic loot box features to be disabled by default, with an opt-in option for players The report also expresses support for the government's proposed changes to the classification system, aimed at reducing harm from casinos and loot box features in video games. In March, the government proposed introducing an 18-plus age rating for games with digital gambling and a mature (15 and up) classification for games with loot boxes. At the time, the proposed amendments were intended to "protect the most vulnerable members of our community from gambling-related harm and indicate that such games are not suitable for children."
