Perfect Dark Remains in Pre-Production, Release Date Still Years Away

The Perfect Dark reboot by The Initiative is still in its pre-production phase, three years after its announcement and five years since the studio's establishment, as reported by IGN. The project has experienced significant challenges, including a change in development direction in 2022, when the team decided to start from scratch using Unreal Engine 5. IGN spoke with 13 sources close to the project, who attributed the delays to a lack of clear vision and accountability. A former employee of The Initiative expressed frustration, stating, "The blame lies with The Initiative. We didn't hold anyone accountable for the project's vision, and we allowed people to keep trying different approaches without a clear direction." Developers from The Initiative, Crystal Dynamics, and Certain Affinity shared that Microsoft had adopted a relatively hands-off approach to the project. This approach has been criticized, with Xbox head Phil Spencer suggesting that the company had been too hands-off with Arkane's Redfall, which received a disappointing reception earlier this year. However, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty disagreed with this characterization, stating, "The amount of time I've spent discussing the project with Darrell Gallagher and the team at The Initiative is actually the opposite of hands-off." According to IGN's sources, the game is still in pre-production and is estimated to be two to three years away from its release date.
