Google Trials New Feature Allowing Users to Play Games Directly on YouTube

Reports have emerged that Google is internally testing a novel feature for YouTube, dubbed Playables, which would enable users to engage with games directly on the platform. According to information obtained by the Wall Street Journal, including an email sent to Google staff regarding Playables, these games can be accessed through YouTube's website or via its mobile applications on iOS and Android devices. A screenshot viewed by the publication revealed Stack Bounce, a classic arcade game, as one of the titles being internally tested. A Google spokesperson noted, 'Gaming has long been an area of focus for YouTube. While we regularly experiment with new features, we do not have any announcements to make at this time.' This development follows Google's previous foray into cloud gaming with Stadia, which ceased operations in September 2022. At the time of Stadia's closure, its former VP and general manager, Phil Harrison, highlighted that the technology underpinning Stadia had been successfully proven and had potential applications beyond gaming, including YouTube and Google Play.
