Australia's Digital Games Tax Offset Legislation Receives Official Approval

The Australian government has given its official seal of approval to the Digital Games Tax Offset. According to the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, the legislation has been passed by both parliamentary houses. Initially introduced in 2021, this incentive offers a 30% tax break to local game development studios with projects exceeding AU$500,000, applicable from July 1, 2022. The announcement also highlighted a 26% year-over-year increase in revenue for Australian game developers, alongside a 59% growth in full-time employment. IGEA CEO Ron Curry stated: "This milestone marks a significant breakthrough for Australia's game creators, renowned globally for their exceptional work. With this incentive, they can now move forward with confidence, expand their operations, and cater to the global demand for gaming content, driving the knowledge-based economy. We are deeply grateful to the Albanese Labor government for their efforts in passing the DGTO legislation, to the Opposition for their bipartisan support, and to the Senate for its approval."
