Microsoft Ends Xbox One Development, Shifts Focus to Current-Gen Consoles
Microsoft-owned studios have ceased development for the Xbox One, redirecting their efforts towards creating games exclusively for the current generation of consoles. In a recent interview with Axios, Microsoft Studios head Matt Booty stated, "We've transitioned to Gen 9," indicating the company's focus on the Xbox Series X and S. Booty confirmed that none of the Xbox studios are presently working on titles for the previous generation, except for providing support for ongoing games like Minecraft. However, he noted that current-gen Xbox titles will remain accessible on Gen 8 hardware through Xbox's cloud streaming services. Furthermore, Booty assured that Xbox studios will continue to develop native games for the Xbox Series S, acknowledging the additional workload for developers. As the teams gain experience with the technology, they are learning to "plan more effectively, anticipating potential challenges." This development comes on the heels of Microsoft's announcement of a new 1TB Xbox Series S model, set to launch in September.
