Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Achieves 1.5 Million Boxed Sales in Japan During May

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom took the top spot in Japan's physical game sales for May, as expected. According to Famitsu's data, the game sold 1.5 million copies by May 28. A weekly breakdown reveals that 1.1 million copies were sold during the second week of May alone, with the game releasing on May 12. This translates to 1.1 million units sold within just three days. In comparison, its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, had sold 346,000 copies by its third weekend in March 2017. Tears of the Kingdom far outpaced the competition, with the second-best-selling game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, selling over 47,000 copies in May. The PS4 version of Hogwarts Legacy debuted at third place, selling 43,000 units. The Switch regained its top position in the hardware charts, driven by the launch of Zelda, with the Switch OLED model accounting for 52.8% of new hardware sales in May, totaling over 274,000 units. Across all Switch models, the console sold 345,000 units in Japan during May. The PS5 maintained its second place in the hardware charts, representing 28% of sales, or over 145,000 units. Notably, Nintendo titles occupied seven of the top ten spots in May's sales rankings, including Breath of the Wild, which returned to the sixth position.
