ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first‑ever PAX Unplugged event in Houston, slated for the last weekend of June 2027. This new installment follows the original Unplugged concept, which debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017 as a celebration of tabletop and analog gaming experiences distinct from the digital‑focused PAX festivals. According to Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for the PAX brand, the tabletop sector has continued to expand at a rapid pace, and its enthusiastic community has become a core pillar of the broader PAX ecosystem.

"The tabletop industry keeps growing, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," Gonzalez told GamesIndustry.biz during the announcement. He emphasized that the decision to explore another Unplugged location involved a careful analysis of several major metropolitan areas, weighing factors such as exhibitor interest, regional demand, and the logistical capabilities of each city’s convention infrastructure.

"When we made the decision to investigate the feasibility of another Unplugged, we considered a number of major cities factoring in demand from our exhibitor partners to place a tabletop PAX in this region and city infrastructure. We were always partial to returning to the South, and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us," Gonzalez explained. The announcement also serves as a bittersweet reminder that PAX South, which last convened in San Antonio in January 2020, was officially cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021.

The hiatus left a sizable community of Southern gamers without a regional gathering point, and many have expressed eagerness for a revival. By choosing Houston—a city with a vibrant gaming scene, ample convention space, and a strong network of hobby shops and tabletop cafés—PAX hopes to fill that void and re‑engage fans who have been waiting for a return. PAX Unplugged Houston will occupy the George R.

Brown Convention Center, a venue known for hosting large‑scale trade shows and cultural events. The three‑day festival will run from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027. Attendees can expect a sprawling expo floor dedicated to analog gaming publishers, designers, and retailers.

The floor will showcase everything from classic board games and role‑playing titles to cutting‑edge hobbyist creations, miniature painting stations, and indie tabletop experiments. In addition to the exhibition space, the program will feature a robust schedule of panels and workshops.

Industry veterans will discuss design theory, narrative building, and the evolving business models of tabletop publishing. Meanwhile, community‑led sessions will provide space for fans to share homebrew rules, organize meet‑ups, and explore niche hobbies such as deck‑building, legacy games, and cooperative storytelling. Competitive tournaments will also be a highlight, with organized play for popular titles like "Gloomhaven," "Warhammer 40,000," and "Magic: The Gathering," offering both casual and high‑stakes brackets. Gonzalez addressed speculation about future expansions of the PAX brand, emphasizing that the primary goal remains delivering the highest quality experience for current exhibitors and attendees.

"We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he said. He added that the team is actively refining the event’s layout, introducing new feature zones, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks across both the East and West coasts. "We're constantly delivering a great expo hall with new games for fans to discover," Gonzalez noted.

The organizer also reflected on the resilience of the gaming community. "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," he remarked. This sentiment underscores the broader mission of PAX Unplugged: to provide a welcoming, inclusive space where tabletop enthusiasts can connect, learn, and celebrate their shared hobby, regardless of broader market fluctuations.

Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston are slated to begin later this year, alongside applications for media representatives and content creators who wish to cover the event. Early‑bird pricing, group discounts, and special passes for exhibitors will be announced as part of the rollout. Organizers encourage prospective attendees to sign up for updates via the official PAX website to receive the latest information on programming announcements, guest speakers, and exclusive preview events. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston represents a strategic move to re‑establish a strong tabletop presence in the Southern United States, offering fans a dedicated venue for analog gaming, community interaction, and industry insight.

With a carefully curated lineup of exhibitors, panels, tournaments, and social gatherings, the June 2027 event aims to honor the legacy of PAX South while forging a fresh identity for the Unplugged brand. The anticipation is high, and the gaming community eagerly awaits the chance to gather once again under one roof to celebrate the timeless appeal of tabletop play.
