UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to introduce the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a specialised business‑focused programme designed to assist independent game studios operating out of the United Kingdom. This collaborative effort recognises that many promising indie projects stumble not because of a lack of creative vision, but because they lack the strategic guidance and resources needed to reach and retain an audience.

By offering a structured learning environment, the Academy aims to fill that gap and empower developers to turn their concepts into commercially viable products. The Academy’s core mission is to furnish early‑stage developers with a comprehensive toolkit for constructing effective go‑to‑market strategies and cultivating sustainable communities around their games. Over the course of the programme, participants will explore a series of six online modules that delve into critical topics such as market diagnostics, insight generation, strategic marketing planning, campaign execution, community engagement via Discord, and the development of a distinctive studio brand identity.

Each module combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises, ensuring that studios can immediately apply what they learn to their own projects. A distinctive feature of the Academy is its emphasis on leveraging Discord as a central hub for community building.

Discord has become the de‑facto platform where gamers congregate, share feedback, and form lasting bonds with developers. By integrating Discord‑specific strategies into the curriculum, the Academy equips studios with the knowledge to create vibrant, interactive spaces that keep players invested throughout a game’s lifecycle. Guest speakers from the wider industry—including seasoned marketers, community managers, and successful indie founders—will share real‑world case studies and offer personalized advice, enriching the learning experience.

The programme is intentionally selective, opening its doors to only ten to twelve studios each cycle. This limited cohort model ensures that each participating team receives ample attention and mentorship. The inaugural cohort will kick off with a face‑to‑face gathering at EGX during MCM Comic Con in London, scheduled for next month.

This initial session will provide an opportunity for networking, introductions, and an overview of the Academy’s objectives. Following the live launch, the curriculum will shift to a series of virtual workshops held throughout November and early December, allowing studios to work remotely while still benefiting from expert guidance. The final segment of the Academy culminates in another in‑person event, where each studio will showcase the go‑to‑market plan they have developed over the course of the programme.

These presentations will be framed as a shared case study, highlighting how the concepts taught in the modules have been applied to real‑world scenarios. This public demonstration not only offers valuable feedback from peers and industry veterans but also serves as a platform for studios to attract potential investors, publishers, or community supporters. Applications for the first cohort are now open, with a deadline of 30 September 2026. Interested indie studios can submit their proposals through the provided application portal.

The selection committee will evaluate candidates based on criteria such as the originality of their game concept, the readiness of their development pipeline, and the potential impact of a well‑executed market strategy. "Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE.

"The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow." Echoing this sentiment, Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." Beyond the immediate benefits of the Academy, participants can expect long‑term advantages such as ongoing mentorship, access to a network of fellow indie creators, and potential collaborations with Discord and GameFlex. The programme also aims to foster a culture of data‑driven decision making, encouraging studios to continuously monitor player feedback, engagement metrics, and market trends to refine their strategies post‑launch. In summary, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a strategic investment in the future of the UK indie game ecosystem.

By combining expert instruction, hands‑on community‑building tactics, and direct support from leading platforms, the initiative seeks to transform promising game ideas into successful, audience‑driven experiences. Studios that secure a place in the programme will not only gain actionable insights but also join a supportive community committed to elevating the British indie gaming landscape.
