Microsoft to Contest UK Regulator's Block on Activision Blizzard Acquisition

Following the UK Competition and Markets Authority's decision to block Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the tech giant has filed an appeal with the Competition Appeal Tribunal. The appeal, submitted on May 24, marks the beginning of a lengthy process that could take up to nine months to resolve. The CMA had cited concerns that allowing Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard would undermine innovation in the rapidly growing cloud gaming market. Microsoft, however, remains committed to the acquisition, arguing that it will drive technological innovation and investment in the UK. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has also expressed confidence in the deal, stating that it is beneficial for competition and will help the UK grow its leadership position in the technology sector. The UK regulator had previously expressed concerns that Microsoft might make Activision Blizzard's popular games, such as Call of Duty, exclusive to its own cloud gaming service, thereby reinforcing its dominant position in the market. The case is far from over, with the appeal process expected to be a lengthy one.
