Japan Witnesses First-Ever Arrest for Video Game Spoiler-Related Offense

In a historic move, Japanese authorities have apprehended a 52-year-old individual from Nagoya for unlawfully uploading videos of a game on YouTube, marking the country's first arrest for such an offense. According to Japan Today, the uploaded content included monetized videos of Stein;Gate: My Darling's Embrace, which also featured the game's ending. The visual novel, originally released in 2011 and re-released in 2019, is currently owned by media firm Kadokawa. The YouTuber in question also posted videos from the anime adaptation of the game, as well as Spy x Family, another animated series. Japan Today noted that while gameplay videos from Japanese YouTubers are common on the platform, especially those not generating ad revenue, the use of such content generally requires permission from the rights holder, as stated by CODA, Japan's Content Overseas Distribution Promotion Organization.
