Riot Games to Provide Compensation to 1,548 Women in Gender Bias Lawsuit

In a recent development to the Riot Games gender bias case, it has been revealed that 1,548 female employees and contractors will receive financial compensation. According to a court filing by Rust Consulting, the firm managing the process, these women will be eligible for payments as part of a $100 million settlement stemming from a 2018 class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and a toxic work environment at the company behind League of Legends. The settlement, announced in December 2021 and approved by a California court in July 2022, stipulates that each of the 1,548 women will receive an initial payment between $2,500 and $5,000, with potential additional payments of up to $40,000 based on their employment status and tenure. Seven women opted out of the settlement. Since then, Riot Games has been working to improve its work culture and releases annual diversity and inclusion reports. The 2022 report showed that women make up 27.5% of the staff and 25.9% of global leadership, indicating progress. Updates to the settlement include a new court filing showing payouts between $5,000 and $156,056 for eligible current and former workers. Following the court's approval of the settlement agreement, Riot's SVP of corporate affairs expressed gratitude for the patience and support of employees throughout the process, acknowledging the importance of earning trust through inclusive experiences for both employees and players.
