Overwatch 2 Drops PvE Hero Mode

In a recent update, the Overwatch 2 development team announced that the game will no longer feature a PvE hero mode. According to game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss, this decision was made to focus on the game's multiplayer aspect and enhance the overall player experience. Keller stated, "Our priority is always the live game and the people playing it, and we devote our development efforts accordingly." The PvE hero mode was initially announced at BlizzCon 2019 as a key feature for Overwatch 2, with plans for character reworks and a progression system. While narrative story missions are still in development, the team realized that implementing the PvE hero mode would require significant resources and divert attention away from the live game. In an interview, Keller explained that the development team came to this realization as they approached the launch of Overwatch 2, saying, "We couldn't justify saving up content for years to come, which would have meant pulling resources away from our current players and those who would be playing Overwatch 2." As a result, the team decided to focus on the live game and a new story arc launching in Season 6. When asked about the change in plans, Neuss noted that the team's understanding of the time, iteration, and technology required for the PvE hero mode made it clear that the initial schedule was not feasible.
