PS5 Surpasses 19 Million Units Shipped in FY2022, with Game Revenues Soaring 33% to $26.5 Billion

The PlayStation 5 has achieved a significant milestone, shipping 19 million units in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, exceeding Sony's initial target of 18 million. This accomplishment was facilitated by the resolution of pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions that had hindered the console's sales in its early years. The announcement was made in conjunction with Sony's full-year financial results, which revealed substantial increases in game sales. Key highlights include: Total sales of ¥11.5 trillion ($84.5 billion), representing a 16% year-on-year increase; operating income of ¥1.2 trillion ($8.8 billion), unchanged from the previous year; and income before income taxes of ¥1.2 trillion ($8.8 billion), marking a 6% rise. The Game & Network Services segment, which encompasses PlayStation, reported sales of ¥3.6 trillion ($26.5 billion), a 33% increase, and operating income of ¥250 billion ($1.8 billion), a 28% decline. Notably, 19.1 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped, a 66% increase, and total game sales reached ¥3.1 trillion ($22.8 billion), up 35%. The PlayStation 5's strong performance was driven by increased sales of both hardware and software, with the console's operating income expected to become more profitable in the next financial year due to resolved supply issues.
