US Sega Employees Push for Unionization

A group of 144 employees at Sega of America, known as the Allied Employees Guild Improving Sega (AEGIS), has submitted a petition for a union election to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The group comprises employees from various departments, including live service, marketing, and product development, and is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). In a statement, AEGIS emphasized that fair wages and better working conditions are essential for producing high-quality games, saying, "We believe that our workers and audiences deserve games created by people who earn a decent living." The group highlights that nearly a third of Sega's staff are not full-time employees, lacking paid time off and bereavement leave. The primary objectives of the unionization effort include securing higher base pay, stable benefits, clear career advancement paths, balanced workloads, and adequate staffing to prevent overwork. This move follows a surge in unionization within the gaming industry, with successful union formations at Raven Software, Blizzard Albany, and the establishment of Game Workers Australia and Anemone Hug Interactive in recent years.
