Netflix Recruits Veteran Halo Developer Joseph Staten for New AAA Game
Key highlights include: Netflix's appointment of Joseph Staten, former head of creative for Halo Infinite, to lead a new AAA project; Frank O'Connor's departure from Microsoft after almost 20 years of working on the Halo series; and a series of recent departures and layoffs from 343 Industries. Staten, who left 343 Industries two weeks ago, will serve as creative director at Netflix Games, working on an original IP that will debut as a multi-platform AAA game. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating that he loves collaborating with others to build immersive worlds filled with iconic characters and deep mysteries. Staten's experience in the gaming industry spans several years, having worked on the first three Halo games, assisted with narrative elements of Halo Wars and Halo 3: ODST, and later worked on Destiny. He rejoined Microsoft Studios in 2014 and became campaign project lead for Halo Infinite in 2020. This significant hire marks Netflix's continued expansion into the gaming space, with six internal development teams and recent acquisitions of several game studios. Meanwhile, Microsoft confirmed Frank O'Connor's departure, thanking him for his contributions to the Halo franchise and wishing him well. O'Connor had been working on Halo since 2004, contributing to the games, novelizations, and the Halo TV series. His departure follows a string of recent exits from the Halo team, including the founder of 343 Industries and several key staff members.
