Sega Set to Acquire Rovio Entertainment in €706 Million Deal
In a significant move, Sega has announced plans to acquire Rovio Entertainment, the creator of the popular Angry Birds franchise, in a deal valued at €706 million ($776 million). The Japanese gaming giant aims to purchase Rovio's outstanding shares and options at €9.25 per share and €1.48 per option, with the backing of Rovio's board of directors. The acquisition is anticipated to be finalized in the second quarter of the current financial year. The strategic rationale behind the deal is to leverage Rovio's expertise to accelerate Sega's intellectual properties, including Sonic the Hedgehog, in the mobile gaming space. This aligns with Sega's global expansion strategy, focusing on enhancing and expanding its brands. Rovio, which has faced challenges in developing new intellectual properties beyond Angry Birds, will gain access to new franchises. The acquisition will also enable Sega to tap into Rovio's live-service platform, Beacon, and its substantial audience in the US and Europe, driving growth in the mobile market. Furthermore, Sega believes its experience in maintaining and growing the Sonic brand can be applied to extend and grow the Angry Birds intellectual property across various segments, including games, anime, and movies. According to Haruki Satomi, president and Group CEO of Sega Sammy, "The mobile gaming market has immense potential, and accelerating expansion in this field has been a long-term goal for Sega." Satomi expressed his enthusiasm for the transaction, highlighting the potential synergies created by combining both companies' brands, characters, fanbase, and corporate culture. Rovio CEO Alexandre Pelletier-Normand also welcomed the deal, citing the opportunity to utilize Rovio's expertise and tools to enhance and expand both Rovio's and Sega's vibrant intellectual properties. The combination of the two companies is expected to bring significant benefits, with the potential to create exciting new experiences for players worldwide.
