Global Box Office: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Surpasses $500 Million

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has achieved a significant milestone, generating over $500 million in worldwide revenue. According to Variety, the film reached this benchmark just nine days after its theatrical release. Domestically, it earned $260.3 million, while international box office sales totaled $248.4 million. In comparison, the 2019 film Pokémon: Detective Pikachu earned $161 million globally during its opening weekend, and Sonic The Hedgehog 2, released in 2022, held the record for the highest-grossing video game film with $331 million, surpassing the first Sonic film's $319 million. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the second theatrical film based on Nintendo's iconic character, following the 1993 live-action film that underperformed at the box office. The trend of video game adaptations into cross-media animation projects continues to gain momentum, with Netflix's Arcane, based on League of Legends, currently in production for its second season. Additionally, Sega has announced plans to release Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters by late 2024.
