Germany's Gaming Market Sees Slight Uptick in 2022
The German gaming market experienced a modest 1% growth, reaching €9.87 billion, according to a report by the German Games Industry Association. This growth is characterized as 'stabilization at a high level' after the market saw significant increases of 32% and 17% in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The revenue figures were sourced from GfK and Data.ai. Despite various challenges, including inflation and decreased gaming time, the market remained stable. The managing director of Game, Felix Falk, stated that the 1% growth is a sign of the industry's success, as it consolidates its gains near the €10 billion mark. Online gaming services saw the strongest growth, with a 20% year-over-year increase, while the hardware market experienced declines. However, gaming PCs and laptops saw a 14% growth. On the software side, full game purchases decreased by 1%, but in-game and in-app purchases increased by 2%, resulting in a 1% overall increase in software revenues. Although the growth was modest, the German industry performed better than many major gaming markets, including the US and China, which saw declines in 2022.
