Veteran Game Developer Mike Berlyn Passes Away

Renowned game creator Mike Berlyn, best known for bringing Bubsy the Bobcat to life, has passed away at the age of 73. The news was shared by Digital Eclipse president Mike Mika and former Bend Studio director John Garvin on Twitter. Berlyn's journey in the gaming world began in 1981 with the development of Oo-Topos for the Apple II, a project he worked on alongside his wife, Muffy Berlyn. He went on to co-found Brainwave Creations and later, in 1992, established Bend Studio, initially known as Blank, Berlyn & Co., in partnership with Marc Blank. His notable game credits include Bubsy 3D, Altered Destiny, and Syphon Filter, as well as Tass Times in Tonetown, which he created with Rebecca Heineman. Beyond his contributions to the gaming industry, Berlyn was also a prolific author, penning multiple books during the 1980s. In 1998, he and his spouse founded Cascade Mountain Publishing. In a reflective 2005 interview with GameDeveloper, Berlyn expressed his preference for casual games, citing their broad appeal and lack of controversy. Following his passing, Berlyn was remembered on Twitter by Rebecca Heineman, who expressed her deep sadness at the loss of a colleague and friend with whom she had collaborated on Tass Times in Tonetown.
