Acquiring Wordle Transformed the New York Times' Gaming Business

During her presentation at GDC 2023, New York Times Executive Producer Zoe Bell reflected on the significant impact of acquiring Wordle in January 2022, and how it revolutionized the company's gaming sector. The massive success of Wordle led to increased engagement across the NYT's entire gaming portfolio, Bell explained, providing insight into the company's approach to game development. Notably, Wordle's search popularity surpassed that of major news topics like Ukraine and the Queen in 2022. According to Bell, "A year after its launch on the NYT, Wordle's daily active users remain remarkably high. Purchasing Wordle drastically altered our business landscape, introducing the NYT's games to a much broader audience. Some of this growth was a result of fortunate circumstances, while other aspects were carefully planned." Looking ahead, the NYT is exploring ways to further transform its gaming business. As Bell stated, "First and foremost, we will continue to nurture our existing successful games, including Wordle and Crossword, with ongoing investment." The company also plans to seek out new gaming opportunities, acknowledging the challenges involved in creating a successful game. When internally prototyping games, the NYT considers several key factors, including puzzles that are rewarding and have a satisfying moment of achievement, approachability, ease of learning, and the potential for social sharing and daily engagement. Established in May 2022, these criteria can be applied to the company's existing games and will serve as a guideline for future development. Over the past year, the NYT has had two games in beta testing, from which they gained valuable insights, comparable to those obtained from Wordle. However, Wordle's impact on the NYT's audience exceeded all expectations, prompting the company to redefine its understanding of a hit game's magnitude. As Bell concluded, "We would be thrilled to have another success like Wordle."
