CCP Games Secures $40 Million in Funding for Blockchain-Based AAA Game Set in EVE Online Universe

CCP Games has successfully raised $40 million in a recent funding round, with the primary objective of utilizing these funds to develop a novel blockchain-based game. The investment was spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz, accompanied by contributions from esteemed firms such as Makers Fund, Bitkraft, Kingsway Capital, Nexon, Hashed, and several others. This funding will enable CCP Games to expand upon its existing research and development endeavors, specifically focusing on the realms of blockchain and web3 gaming. The ultimate goal is to create a full-scale, AAA title that is deeply rooted within the EVE Online universe. Notably, the new game will operate independently of CCP's current projects, including the core EVE Online game. Although specific details are scarce at this stage, including the chosen blockchain platform, CCP has revealed that key game systems will be developed on-chain, emphasizing persistence, composability, and open third-party development to foster a novel relationship between virtual worlds and players. According to CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, "Since its inception, CCP Games has strived to create virtual worlds that surpass real-life experiences in terms of significance. With the advancements in blockchain technology, we are now poised to craft a universe that not only leverages our expertise in player agency and autonomy but also empowers players to engage in unprecedented ways." Pétursson further expressed his excitement about this new frontier in the studio's history, marking the beginning of their third decade in virtual world operations, and acknowledged the confidence placed in them by their partners in the development of this innovative title.
