Netflix Adopts a More Strategic Approach to Game Development Partnerships

Netflix is shifting its focus towards a more strategic approach in its growing gaming sector, as revealed in an update to GamesIndustry.biz. This new direction comes as the company announces partnerships with renowned game developers, including Super Evil Megacorp, known for Vainglory, and Ustwo Games, the studio behind Monument Valley. These collaborations are set to yield exclusive content for Netflix, including a title based on an unannounced Netflix IP from Super Evil Megacorp and the addition of Monument Valley and its sequel to Netflix's game collection next year. Furthermore, a sequel to the popular game Too Hot To Handle, developed by Nanobit, is slated for release later this year, and Ubisoft's Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace is scheduled to launch on April 18. Netflix has emphasized its commitment to expanding its gaming portfolio, with 40 titles planned for release in 2023, adding to the 55 games launched since November 2021. The company currently has 86 games in development, with 16 being handled by in-house studios and 70 by external partners. Despite initial reports suggesting a low uptake of its gaming offerings, with only 1% of subscribers downloading titles in the first nine months, Netflix's Vice President for External Games, Leanne Loombe, expressed pride in the progress made so far. Loombe highlighted the company's focus on improving game visibility for subscribers, with dedicated tabs and rows introduced in the Android and iOS apps, respectively, and ongoing tests for new discovery mechanisms. The company is also exploring ways to enhance game distribution, currently directing subscribers to external app stores for downloads, with a long-term goal of integrating games seamlessly into the Netflix platform, potentially through its cloud gaming technology. Loombe emphasized the importance of titles based on Netflix IP, citing the success of Stranger Things games and the performance of Too Hot To Handle, in growing the gaming audience. The upcoming Super Evil Megacorp title, a team-based game with fluid combat, is seen as a significant project, representing a 'transmedia play' that combines streaming content and gaming. Ultimately, Netflix is confident in its ability to become a major player in the gaming industry, with its expanding portfolio poised to attract new subscribers and add value to existing memberships.
