Former EA Veterans Launch New AAA Game Studio, Fuse Games

A group of former Criterion leaders, who left their previous roles in December, have joined forces to establish a new AAA game development studio called Fuse Games. The studio is led by Matt Webster, a seasoned EA veteran with 32 years of experience, who is joined by fellow co-founders Steve Uphill, Pete Lake, Andrei Shires, and Alan McDairmant. With a focus on creating a positive work environment and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration, the team is currently based in Guildford and is adopting a hybrid working approach. Although the details of their first project are still under wraps, Webster hinted that the studio's goal is to create a AAA console and PC game that will make a significant impact in the gaming industry. The team, which currently consists of 17 people, is expected to grow, with plans to scale up to a size that will enable them to produce high-quality games efficiently. Webster reflected on his decision to leave EA, stating that it was a difficult but necessary step, driven by a desire to explore new opportunities and challenges. He emphasized the importance of creating a positive and inclusive work environment, where team members can thrive and grow. The studio's values, which include a passion for gaming, creative collaboration, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion, are designed to attract top talent and drive innovation. By prioritizing rapid iteration, prototyping, and a sense of urgency, Fuse Games aims to develop games quickly and responsibly, without resorting to crunch. With a strong foundation in place, the studio is poised to make a significant impact in the gaming industry, and Webster's goal is to create as many high-quality games as possible, without being constrained by lengthy development cycles.
