Warning Issued by FBI on Cryptocurrency Theft via Fake Gaming Apps
A warning has been issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the emergence of fake gaming applications designed to steal cryptocurrency from unsuspecting users. The alert includes details on the tactics employed by the scammers and offers advice on how to avoid falling prey to such fraudulent activities. Typically, the scam begins with criminals establishing online relationships with potential victims, eventually introducing them to a fake online or mobile game that promises cryptocurrency rewards in exchange for participation. To engage with the game, victims are prompted to set up a cryptocurrency wallet, purchase currency, and join the app, with the promise of greater rewards for storing more funds in the wallet. However, once the flow of deposits stops, the scammers utilize a hidden program activated at the launch of the fake game to appropriate the funds for themselves. The FBI has also released protective measures for users, including the creation of a unique wallet, the use of third-party blockchain explorers to monitor wallet balances, and regular checks using token allowance checkers to identify and revoke any unauthorized access to wallet funds. Furthermore, the bureau encourages individuals to report instances of fake gaming apps stealing cryptocurrency to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
