Mabel Addis and John Romero to Receive Top Honors at GDC Awards

The organizers of the Game Developers Choice Awards have announced the recipients of this year's special awards. Mabel Addis, a trailblazing game designer, will posthumously receive the Pioneer Award for her groundbreaking work on The Sumerian Game, a 1964 educational game that introduced innovative elements such as in-game narratives and early cutscenes. Addis, who created the game while working as a grade school teacher, passed away in 2004. Her contributions to the gaming industry paved the way for future generations of game designers. John Romero, a renowned game developer, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant impact on the gaming industry. Romero's career spans over four decades, with notable works including Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. He co-founded Id Software and played a key role in establishing the first-person shooter genre. After leaving Id Software, Romero went on to co-found Ion Storm and worked on several other notable projects, including Deus Ex and Daikatanna. The awards ceremony will take place on March 22 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco during the Game Developers Conference. According to Stephenie Hawkins, director of event production for media and entertainment at Informa Tech, the awards will recognize two of the most influential game development talents in history, with Addis and Romero being honored for their creative passion and ingenuity that helped shape the gaming industry.
