Patrice Désilets: A Lifelong Pursuit of Time and Innovation

In 1997, a young Patrice Désilets, fresh out of film school, stumbled upon an opportunity at Ubisoft Montreal. Although he had no experience in video game development, his passion for gaming and knowledge of the industry landed him a job. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey, one that would be defined by his relentless pursuit of innovation and his fascination with time. Désilets' first project, Hype: The Time Quest, laid the groundwork for his future endeavors, including the critically acclaimed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The success of Prince of Persia led to Désilets being tasked with redefining the action-adventure genre, a challenge that would ultimately give birth to Assassin's Creed. Throughout his career, Désilets has remained committed to his design philosophy, prioritizing gameplay mechanics and player freedom. His approach to storytelling emphasizes the importance of integrating narrative with gameplay, rather than imposing a predetermined story on the player. After leaving Ubisoft, Désilets faced numerous challenges, including a highly publicized legal battle to regain the rights to his IP, Amsterdam 1666. However, he has since found success with his independent studio, Panache Digital Games, and the release of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. Désilets' journey serves as a testament to his dedication to innovation and his passion for creating immersive gaming experiences.
