Gaming Industry Sees $115 Billion in Deals Since 2020

The total value of gaming deals from 2020 to 2022 reached $115.3 billion, according to a recent report by InvestGame, which analyzed private investments, mergers and acquisitions, and public offerings in the gaming sector. The report found that mergers and acquisitions accounted for $71.2 billion over the past three years, excluding pending deals like Microsoft's proposed $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Private investments during this period totaled $13.3 billion, while public offerings were valued at $30.8 billion. The year 2021 saw the highest deal value at $55.3 billion, with $33.1 billion attributed to mergers and acquisitions. All categories experienced year-over-year growth in 2021, with public offerings increasing by 57%, private investments by 75%, and mergers and acquisitions by 211%. However, all three categories declined in 2022, with private investments down 31%, mergers and acquisitions down 17%, and public offerings down 75%. The report also identified the most active venture capital funds, with Makers Fund leading the way with 14 deals worth $533 million. Index Ventures and Lightspeed Ventures followed, with deals worth $300 million and $273 million, respectively. InvestGame estimates that venture capital funds have $6.21 million in available cash for new investments. The company expects deal activity to remain relatively stable in 2023, citing the significant dry powder held by gaming venture capitalists and the lower correlation between early-stage rounds and macroeconomic pressure. While some funds paused their investment activities at the end of 2022 to reassess their strategies, many are planning to raise new funds, which is expected to lead to more venture capital deals in the near future.
