Roblox Posts Nearly $1 Billion Net Loss in 2022 Amid Revenue Growth

Roblox has released its financial report for the fourth quarter and full year of 2022, revealing significant jumps in revenue and bookings, but also a deepening of net losses. Key highlights for the twelve months ending December 31, 2022, include: Revenue of $2.2 billion, representing a 16% year-on-year increase, and bookings of $2.9 billion, up 5% from the previous year. However, the company's net loss widened to $934 million, compared to a $504 million loss in 2021. For the fourth quarter, revenue was $579.0 million, a 2% year-on-year increase, and bookings reached $899.4 million, a 17% increase. The net loss for the quarter was $291 million, up from $147 million in the same period last year. The growth in net losses is attributed to higher expenses to support business expansion. Roblox also deferred a significant amount of revenue to later periods due to changes in its paying consumer life calculation. Despite this, the company expects to continue reporting net losses while anticipating net cash generation from operating activities. Additionally, Roblox will cease reporting monthly metrics after March 2023, citing the volatility of month-to-month results. The platform saw a 23% year-over-year increase in daily active users, reaching 56 million in 2022, and 58.8 million in the fourth quarter, a 19% year-on-year increase. Roblox CEO David Baszucki noted that 2022 was a year of innovation, with the company driving towards its vision of reimagining social interactions through deeper forms of expression, communication, and immersion.
