US Gaming Market Sees 5% Decline in January, Reaching $4.3 Billion

In January, the US gaming industry experienced a 5% year-over-year decrease in consumer spending, with total expenditures amounting to $4.3 billion, as reported by NPD data. The majority of the revenue, approximately 88%, stemmed from software sales, which generated $3.79 billion. Meanwhile, hardware sales remained steady at $393 million. The PlayStation 5 took the top spot in console sales in terms of both units and revenue, with the Nintendo Switch coming in second. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 secured the top position in game sales for the month, while EA's Dead Space debuted at number two. Another EA title, Madden NFL 23, rose to third place as the best-selling game for January. Accessory sales saw a 14% decline, totaling $165 million, with the PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black being the top-selling accessory. The NPD provided the data for the top 20 best-selling games between January 1 and January 28.
