Apple Disputes UK Regulator's Remedies for Cloud Gaming on iOS, Citing Unreasonableness

Apple has expressed strong objections to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed remedies aimed at increasing access to cloud gaming services on iOS. In response to the CMA's statement on initiating a phase two investigation into mobile browsers and cloud gaming, Apple argued that the suggested remedies are misguided and unreasonable. The CMA's proposals included revising app store guidelines, enhancing transparency in the app review process, and enabling the sideloading of native apps and alternative app stores on iOS. Apple countered that these measures are not specifically tailored to address cloud gaming concerns but rather target broader issues with app distribution. The company asserted that it has taken proactive steps to support cloud gaming apps, allowing them to be offered via web apps or the App Store, provided each game meets specific requirements, including individual review. Apple justified this requirement by highlighting the unique security and privacy risks associated with gaming content. The company believes that a thorough investigation will demonstrate that its ecosystem does not hinder competition in the cloud gaming space. The CMA's investigation is set to conclude by May 2024.
