Unity Announces Significant Staff Reduction
Unity Technologies has confirmed that it is letting go of 284 employees, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. In an internal letter, CEO John Riccitiello explained that the company has reassessed its goals and priorities due to the current economic climate, resulting in a more selective investment strategy. Riccitiello stated, "We are dealing very specifically with overlap, and a handful of projects are being put on hold." One of the affected projects involved sports viewing technology that allowed viewers to watch events from any angle. Riccitiello noted that the current economy is not conducive to launching such a product, despite the team's impressive work. The majority of the layoffs are reportedly from administrative roles, including IT security and marketing. This marks the second round of layoffs for Unity in under a year, following a similar reduction of 225 employees in June. Those affected were given the opportunity to apply for other positions within the company, with approximately three-quarters of the impacted individuals finding new roles. Riccitiello compared the layoffs to a necessary adjustment, similar to a parent encouraging a child to eat nutritious food for their own benefit. Notably, despite the layoffs, Unity's employee count has increased significantly over the past year, with the company's headcount growing from 5,245 to 8,000, partly due to the acquisition of IronSource. As of now, Unity's stock is trading at around $32, relatively unchanged from last October but down 84% from its peak in November 2021.
