Xbox Introduces Eco-Friendly Updates to Minimize Gaming's Carbon Footprint

In a bid to make gaming more sustainable, Xbox has unveiled several updates aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its consoles. The Xbox Series S and X will now default to a low-power 'Shutdown' mode, which reportedly consumes 20 times less energy than the traditional 'Sleep' mode without compromising performance or update functionality. According to Xbox, this switch can significantly reduce carbon emissions - equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed by a tree over a decade for every two consoles that remain in Shutdown mode for a year. Furthermore, Xbox is introducing a 'carbon aware' feature, which schedules console updates during periods when renewable energy sources are more prevalent in the energy grid. This innovative approach will initially be tested with Xbox Insiders before being rolled out to all users. Additional features, such as Active Hours mode, will also be introduced to minimize power consumption. These initiatives are part of Microsoft's broader commitment to achieving a carbon-negative, water-positive, and zero-waste status by 2030.
